When the Nexus was announced, there were a ton innovative new features shown for the device and Android 2.1: interactive wallpapers, 3D stuff and help for Google Earth. The latter wasn’t available then, and there was no time or date set, but it looks like it’s ready on The Droid soon.
If we had Android 1.5 or 1.6, don’t waste your time. Not to ruin your day, but your phone does not have the power required to power such an pimping program. People reporting the app’s availability have all been Droid users, and that means this is a 2.1-only app so far. Nexus fanboys will have to hold their horses for the 2.1 update, which would appear to be taking longer than most would have wanted or expected.
There’s not a word official yet from the Google team, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated when the announcement is official.
Acer may make plenty of cellphones, but they've so far been a pretty rare sight on North American carriers. That's now set to change this Spring, however, when Rogers will reportedly be the first carrier in North America to offer Acer's new Liquid e phone — and, incidentally, the first carrier in Canada to offer an Android 2.1 phone (not counting the upgradable Milestone, that is). In case you missed its debut at MWC, the Liquid e packs a 3.5-inch touchscreen, along with a slightly underclocked 768MHz Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera, 7.2Mbps 3G and Wi-Fi and, of course, a basic implementation of Android 2.1. Still no indication of a price or exact release date, but Rogers is promising to say more as that approaches.
If you're into the latest location-based, social-networking check-in styled type 'game', you're in luck. Gowalla has just finished a beta app for Android and is asking you, our faithful readers, to give it a whirl. Previously, you could use Gowalla through a serviceable mobile app but we all know that native apps are the way to go. Gowalla has delivered a great experience for Android (some would say it even trumps the iPhone) but it currently lacks Gowalla Trips and doesn't do any image caching, so there's still a little bit left to go.
If you want to get the Gowalla Beta App for Android, point your Android browser to this link: http://static.gowalla.com/gowalla-android-20100212.apk. Make sure you can install non-Market applications by going through Menu > Settings > Applications and checking off "Unknown Sources".
Thanks Wes!
